Hereditary gynaecological cancer is mainly associated with mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These genes act as tumour suppressors, blocking the development of cancer under normal conditions. However, when certain mutations occur in these genes, they lose their functionality and cannot block or impede tumour development. The cumulative risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer throughout life is not always the same.
